Sporting clinch GFA-Hutch professional league title

Panaji, Nov 10 (UNI) Sporting club de Goa today inscribed their name on the GFA Hutch professional football league championship trophy after they brushed aside the challenge of defending champions Dempo sports club 2-1 in the match at Duler ground Mapusa in North Goa.

Sporting, who topped the table with 34 points from 13 outings, won their maiden title. Churchill Brothers are closely following Sporting with 31 points from 14 outings. They will play their last tie on December 3 against Corps of Signals.

Sporting will play their last round match on December 3 against Salgaocar, which will be only of academic interest.

Dempo, who had an upper hand in the first half, shot into the lead as early as in the 12th minute through Stanley Coutinho off a pass from Jerry Zirsangha. 1-0.

Stung by the early debacle, Sporting accelerated the pace of their game and restored parity in the 33rd minute through Nicholas Borges off a cross pass from Anthony D'Souza and at half time, both the were teams tied 1-1.

After cross over, Sporting played with renewed vigour and took the lead in the 66th minute through Dudu Omagbhemi off a well measured pass from Wilton Gomes to make it 2-1.

Sporting could have won by much bigger margin had they utilised the chances before them especially in the second half.
