Priyanka emerges new champion

Chennai, Nov 10 (UNI) Priyanka Kumari of Jharkand became the new National Under-11 Girls champion with the best tally of nine points after ten rounds in the tenth and penultimate round of the Sri 20th National Under-11 Chess Championship here today.

In the Boys category, last year's World Under-10 Chess Champion Sahaj Grover of Delhi and Fenil Shah of Gujarat with 8.5 points, were in a neck and neck race for the title.

Unlike in the Girls category, here further more a quadruplicate of Shiven Khosla (Mah), G.V.Sai Krishna (AP), Vian D'Cunha (Kar), The Jharkandi girl, who annexed the title with a round to spare was closely followed by three Tamil Nadu players -- P Michelle Catherina, J Vaishnavi and Srinidhi Nagarajan, with 7.5 points each, staking a claim for the runners up and subsequent placings.

Priyanka Kumari had a facile victory over Soumya Srivastav of Maharashtra. Srinidhi Nagarajan missed the winning lines and finally drew against Agnihotri Ghosh of West Bengal. But, Vaishnavi played a clever ending to defeat Pratyusha of Andhra.
