NE to get Rs 100 crores for border area development

Aizawl, Nov 10 (UNI) With the aim to improve the standards of the people, who lives especially in the border areas, Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned Rs 102.30 crores under Border Area Development Programme (BADP) for NE states.

The project aims to provide link roads, employment generation, health agriculture and allied sectors and to inculcate a sense of security among the people living in remote and inaccessible areas situated near international border.

According to the appraisal report from the Home Ministry to the state government here, a model village would be setup in these area, where a sizeable population surrounded by five to six or more villages close to the border area block.

Besides, a mobile dispensary fitted with necessary portable equipment will also be established.

The BADP funds will also be utilised to setup Community based infrastructure like forestry, pasture land, sheds for livestock, floriculture park, fishery ponds, multi-utility community centres, mini marketing yards and aromatic parks.

Home Ministry instructed the respective NE states to prepare shemes, which could be implemented in a time frame of 1-2 years and send the same to the department of border management duly approved by the state-level screening committee.

Apart from this, a task force for preparing a proposal for comprehensive development of border areas over the next 3-4 years has also been setup under the chairmanship of B N Yugandhar, member planning commission, which includes representatives from Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of power, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Ministry of Finance.

Out of the total Rs 102.30 crore, Asom would get Rs. 32.98 crore, Manipur (Rs 13.52 crore), Arunachal Preadesh rpt Arunachal Pradesh (Rs 7.5 crore), Meghalaya (Rs 7.3 crore), Mizoram (Rs 13.02 crore), Nagaland (Rs 4.78 crore), Sikkim (Rs 6.58 crore) and Tripura (Rs 16.62 crore).

North-east India shares a huge international border with Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh share a combined 1643 km with their military-ruled neighbour Myanmar while Assam, Tripura, Mehalaya share a combined 1562 km with Bangladesh.
