Mithuns damage huge crop in Mizoram

Aizawl, Nov 10: Huge crop loss was reported in Tuahzual area of Western Mizoram due to mithuns (wild buffaloes) and villagers sought government help to combat the menace.

In a recent letter to the forest chief of Mizoram the villagers stated, ''The mithuns have caused huge damages to our crops and we will have no choice but to withdraw from protection of the wild animals and either kill them or chase them away to another area''.

Forest officials here said Tuahzawl villagers have been protecting wild animals in surrounding jungles for past a decade in compliance with the wildlife protection campaign of the state government.

The population of mithuns in the village's reserved forests has come to ten while there are about eight gibbons, according to report of state forest department.
