Man gets life for murdering student on train

LONDON, Nov 10 (Reuters) A man who stabbed to death a student on a train was jailed for life today and told he must serve a minimum 21 years.

Thomas Wood, 22, murdered the student, 19-year-old Thomas Grant, as the victim was on his way home in May to Gloucestershire from St Andrew's University where he had just finished the first year of a degree in history and Arabic.

Wood admitted murder at Preston Crown Court.

The court had heard the stabbing had taken place in Cumbria aboard a Virgin Trains service from Glasgow to Paignton in Devon.

Wood had been arguing with his girlfriend before the killing and had taken offence when Grant glanced at him as they stood on the platform at Carlisle station.

Detective Superintendent Michael Field told reporters afterwards the murder had been committed for no reason and that Wood had shown no remorse.
