Indo-Myanmar international border to be fenced
Aizawl, Nov 10: With the aim to stop smuggling of illegal drugs and arms along the Indo-Myanmar border, Home Ministry has emphasised on strengthening the ongoing effort of fencing Indo-Myanmar border.
State home department sources here today said recently a three-member Indian delegation of Ministry of Home Affairs have visited the border areas to oversee the propsed border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar region.
According to the proposed plans, for the first phase, border fencing will be taken up in and around Moreh town (Manipur) area along porous Indo-Myanmar border.
"Other parts of the border would also be fenced in second phase and survey and demarcation works for the fencing would be undertaken by Survey of India in association with Myanmarese officials soon," sources said.
A consultative meeting on border fencing was held recntly in Delhi, which was attended by the representatives of BSF, Assam Rifles posted along the border and Border Road Organisation (BRO) apart form the Additional Chief Secretary (Border Management) of the Union Home Ministry, Assam Rifles sources said.
India shares about 1,643 km stretch of international border with Myanmar, out of which only 52 kilometers is manned by Indian security forces.
