Mysore, Nov 10: Filing of nominations for the December four byelection to the prestigious Chamundeswari Assembly constitutency began today, with Mysore Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer S Selva Kumar issuing the notification for the bypoll.

On the opening day of filing of nominations, no candidate filed his papers for the bypoll, necessitated by the resignation of the seat by former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Speaking to newspersons here, he said filing of nominations would close on November 17 and scrutiny of papers would be taken up on November 18. The last date for withdrawal of nomination papers was November 20. Counting of votes would be taken up on December seven.

An electorate of 3,68,599, including 1,79,317 women, would exercise their franchise at 346 booths in the constituency, which was 54 booths more than the last elections. Electronic voting machines would be used and necessary steps would be taken to create awareness in the rural areas about using EVMs, he said.

Mr Kumar said sensitive and hypersensitive booths would be identified shortly. The model code of conduct had come into force from November seven and would prevail till December ten. The district administration would videograph all publicity campaigns and election activities in the entire constituency during the period.

Referring to the recent poll-related violent incidents in the constituency, he said a report had been sent to the State Election Officer based on newspaper reports. There was no request from any party for deployment of central forces for election duty. Poll observers would be appointed by the State Election Commissioner shortly to supervise the constituency, he added.

Meanwhile, in a release here, district Superintendent of Police S Murugan said elaborate security arrangements have been made in view of the election. Three platoons of KSRP, six district armed reserve police and five paramilitary forces would be deployed in the constituency. Besides, 20 motorcycle patrol teams and 12 jeep patrol teams would be on duty round the clock in the constituency, he said.
