Kozhikode, Nov 10 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist), a partner in the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, today fielded its leader George M Thomas as the LDF candidate for the December 4 Thiruvambadi bypoll.

The party state committee has approved his candidature as recommended by the district committee, sources said.

Starting his political career through the Democratic Youth Federation of India(DYFI), the youth wing of the party, 50-year-old Thomas is the Thiruvambadi area secretary and the district joint secretary of the pro-CPI(M) Karshaka Sangham.

The Indian Union Muslim League would announce the UDF candidate for the seat tomorrow. A meeting of the executive committee of the party was in session here today to choose a suitable candidate.

The bypoll was caused following the demise of CPI(M) member Mathai Chacko last month.

LDF won the seat for the first time in 2006, ending the monopoly of its arch rival UDF, which was retaining it since the formation of the constituency in 1977.
