UP BJP president arrested in Bareilly
Lucknow, Nov 9 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh BJP unit president Keshri Nath Tripathi and hundreds of party supporters were arrested in Bareilly today en route to Moradabad to join the agitation in connection with alleged irregularities in the counting of mayoral election.
Mr Tripathi was arrested near Satellite Bus stand and taken to the police lines.
Police said the BJP leader was taken in custody for violating Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 144.
Later addressing a roadside meeting, Mr Tripathi announced the party leaders would soon meet the President demanding President's Rule in UP.
''The irregularities resorted to by the Mulayam Singh Yadav government was violation of the constitutional norms and the coming assembly poll should not be held under his regime,'' he added.
Bareilly BJP MP Santosh Gangwar was also present on the occasion.
Mr Tripathi was going to Moradabad, where BJP mayoral candidate Beena Agarwal and her supporters were agitating on 'irregularities' by the district authorities by declaring Samajwadi Party candidate as Mayor.
The BJP alleged the margin of the winning candidate was only 1,700 votes, while over 8,000 votes were declared invalid by the counting officials. SEC has rejected the plea of the BJP candidate for recounting, as they had already cleared the results.
