Security beefed up in Tiruchirapalli airport

Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, Nov 9 (UNI) Security was beefed up further at the international airport here today, following the receipt of an anonymous letter yesterday stating that Al-Qaeda terrorists had planned car bomb attacks on airports.

Police said security had been intensified in the entire airport complex.

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) had been asked to maintain high alert.

While armed CISF personnel were seen patrolling the airport and the local police were busy keeping vigil outside the airport complex.

Though the authorities termed the letter as a ploy to create panic among the public, all the baggages bound for different destinations from here were thoroughly screened.

Visitors are being frisked. Sniffer dog and Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) were conducting searches.

Security has been stepped up in Tiruchirapalli city in view of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's visit on November 11, to formally inaugurate the Unemployment Assistance Scheme and other programmes.

In view of the Chief Minister's visit, the police had decided to issue special press passes to the media with photo affixed.
