MP Assy adjourned sine die

Bhopal, Nov 9 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh Assembly was adjourned sine die this evening, thereby bringing the curtains down on a ten-day winter session, which concluded a day before schedule.

On the final day of the session, which got underway on October 31, the Legislature (Disqualification of Membership) Amendment Bill, 2006 was passed by voice vote -- in the face of stiff protests by the opposition -- and came as a reprieve to more than a dozen ministers vis-a-vis the office-of-profit issue.

''The session was special as the valedictory programme of the Vidhan Sabha's golden jubilee year took place during it. Related programmes got underway on July 17 with an address by President A P J Abdul Kalam,'' said Speaker Ishwardas Rohani.

The session comprised eight sittings, witnessed the passage of five bills and the Second Supplementary Budget for 2006-07.

''A total of 1,985 questions were received. Discussion took place on 23 call attention notices, an adjournment proposal and on the admissibility of an adjournment proposal,'' Mr Rohani added.

Leader of the Opposition Jamuna Devi alleged that the short session did not have room for discussing every issue related to public interest.

''This government promised freedom from fear, hunger and corruption but work is not progressing in that direction,'' said Deputy Speaker Hazarilal Raghuvanshi.
