Make India a hardware producing major: IIIT Director

Bangalore, Nov 9 (UNI) After the giant strides the country had made in becoming a software development major, the time has come for it to take the mantle as a leader in manufacture of computer hardware as well, Indian Institute of Information Technology-B Director S Sadagopan said here today.

Speaking at the inauguration of 'BIG-2006' the Computer Society of India Annual National Conference of the Business and Industries Group, he said there was a myth that India could only excel in developing software and could not be a major in hardware industry in Asia like China or Taiwan. "We should prove this myth wrong. ''We have to conceptualise a road map to make the country a leader in hardware industry,''he said.

Karnataka IT Secretary M N Vidyashankar, in his inaugural address, said the state which had emerged leader in software industry by attracting major global players and scores of SMEs, was ready to extend all help to those who wanted to set up computer hardware and semiconductor industries.

CSI Bangalore Chapter Chairman T Sabhapathy said the conference provided a platform for industry, government and the academia to come together to learn from each other's experience. The objective of the event was to increase awareness on the trends and issue of IT usage in different segments of an emerging market like India.

With emergence of India as a global player and as a potential consumer, the business dynamics were changing, not only to compete against the global players elsewhere but to compete in its own backyard. This posed newer challenges and opportunities. With a strategic view of the IT industry and the practical benefits of real world implementations, the event would help in formulating business strategies for greater business success of the Indian IT industry, he added.
