IRB to continue to guard Kangla

Imphal, Nov 9 (UNI) Kangla fort handed over to the people of Manipur by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in November 2004, would continue to be protected by the 1st Indian Reserve Battalion.

Officials said here today the IRB had been stationed in the Kangla fort for almost a decade even when the Assam Rifles was occupying it.

The kings of Manipur since 33 AD had ruled the state from Kangla fort until it was occupied by the British on April 27, 1891 following the defeat of the state in the Anglo Manipur war of 1891, officials said.

Arts and Cultural officials said the Kangla Fort Board, headed by Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, was taking care of the fort and a special plan has been formulated to erect the earlier structures.
