GE to build two nuclear reactors in India

New Delhi, Nov 9: US giant GE's nuclear arm, GE Energy Nuclear, has said that it plans to build two new nuclear reactors -- Generation 3 and Generation 4 in India, that would generate electricity for the entire country.

''The new reactors will be provided with our advanced technologies - Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) and ESBWR. The first, Generation 3 reactor will acquire a unit size of 15-20 MW, while the second reactor will have a unit size of 13-50 MW, Ge Energy's Nuclear President and CEO Andrew C White said.

Meanwhile, the company is in talks with a few Indian equipment suppliers to work for it, which would help build nuclear plants in the country, Mr White added.

''Our motive is to provide a portfolio solution to the country and we hope our trip this time will be fruitful. We anticipate that the Indo-US nuclear deal will be passed with the support of the Democrats and the Republican parties and we will come to India to initiate the nuclear energy area'', Mr White said.

To expand its reach in India, GE also plans to tie-up with domestic companies for turbines.

Currently on a visit to India, Mr White held discussions with officials from the Atomic Commission and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. He also held a meeting with the NTPC Chairman T Sankaralingam.
