Former Business Standard Managing Editor dies

Kolkata, Nov 09 (UNI) Veteran freedom fighter and former Managing Editor of Business Standard Sourendera Mohan Banerjee died today at a private hospital here.

He was 81. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

One of them is senior journalist Souma Banerjee.

Family sources said Mr Banerjee, who also held the post of Managing Editor of defunct Hindustan Standard, had been admitted to hospital recently and died of old age.

A student of Calcutta University, Mr Banerjee had been jailed for several occassions for freedom movement against the British government. He sat in the post graduate examination from jail.

After completing Masters in Economics, Mr Banerjee joined the Hindustan Standard in early fifties and was elevated to the post of Managing Editor till his retirement in 1985.

Besides teaching Journalism in the Calcutta University, he also authored many books on Journalism like Editing Manual, Reporting Manual, Journalism Review and many more. He also penned a Bengali novel "Agniudayam".

The body would be cremated tomorrow.

Kolkata Press Club also mourned the death of the veteran scribe, who had held various posts of the club.

KPC president Sudeb Roychoudhruy, in a condolence message, said Mr Banerjee's death was a great loss.
