Environmentalists concerned over caged animals

Aizawl, Nov 9: Association for enviornment protection (ASEP) has expressed concern over caged animals in Mizoram and urged the authorities to take step to stop the practice.

ASEP passed a resolution in it's general body meeting here today for strict enforcement of the wildlife protection act 1972 and the preservation on cruelty to animals act 1960.

They also urged the government to set up a zoo development board in the state and demanded better utilisation of eco-club for generating awareness about wildlife and environment protection among common people.

The resolution demanded stringent action against the poachers and strongly decried theorisation of certain parts of animal body as medicines without proof as this hampers wildlife protection.

Addressing the conference state environment and forests minister R Lalthangliana said that the state government has thought to ban age old practice of shifting cultivation for management of environment.

He pointed out a major bio-diversity plan for Dampa tiger reserve has already been taken up in association with world bank adding that the proposal of inclusion of environment education in school syllabus is under active consideration of the government.
