CPM hails Govt-Maoists peace deal in Nepal
New Delhi, Nov 9: The CPI (M) today hailed the peace agreement signed between the seven-party alliance and the Maoists in Nepal as a ''historic breakthrough'' to end an era of conflict and misery.
The six-point agreement is an ''important step'' in the democratic transition that will be given a final shape with the setting up of a constituent assembly to frame a new constitution, the party polit bureau said in a statement.
''Both the Seven Party Alliance the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) leadership are to be congratulated for working out this agreement,'' the statement said.
It said the earlier agreement between the alliance and the Maoists in December 2005 during the anti-monarchy agitations laid the foundation for this ''historic breakthrough''.
The CPI (M), however, warned the forces aligned to ''the monarchy and the US'' against efforts to derail the process of transition to democracy saying it would not be tolerated by the people of Nepal.
Under the agreement signed on Tuesday, the Maoists will join an interim government and Parliament.
