AUDF retains Jamunamukh
Guwahati, Nov 9 (UNI) The Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF) today retained the Jamunamukh assembly constituency defeating the Congress candidate.
AUDF's Sirajuddin Ajmal polled 58,303 votes while Mr Khalilur Rahman Choudhury of Congress secured 44,884 votes.
The by-election assumes great significance as the ruling Congress threw its entire might to wrest the seat, considered to be a citadel of the AUDF since it was vacated by AUDF president Badruddin Ajmal, bete noire of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
In Congress hijacked Asom Gana Parishad candidate Khalilur Rahman Choudhury at the last moment, upsetting the equation both of the AGP as and as its own internal party organs.
''This is a response against Congress's goondagiri. They used everything at their disposal to win the seat but Jamunamukh answered them with our win,'' Badaruddin Ajmal later told newspersons.
