No VAT on items to Golden Temple 'langar'

Nangal, Nov 8: Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh began five-day 'Punjab Vikas Yatra' from here today with an announcement to exempt all commodities and items supplied to Guru Ram Dass 'langar' (community kitchen) of the Golden Temple from VAT.

The commodities items supplied to the 'langars' of Takhat Sri Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo and Sri Durgiana Temple in Amritsar will also be exempted from VAT.

The announcement is apparently to woo the voters for the next Assembly polls in Punjab will be held in February next year. The Golden Temple and Takht Damdama Sahib is under the control of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandik Committee (SGPC), dominated by the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) He also announced upgradation of Nangal sub tehsil to a sub division, thereby fulfilling the long pending demand of the region.
