Flood warning issued downstream of Vaigai

Madurai, Nov 8 (UNI) A flood warning has been issued downstream of River Vaigai in Tamil Nadu today and water has been released from the Vaigai dam as the reservoir reached its maximum storage level of 69 ft.

State Public Works Department officials said inflow and discharge into the dam in adjoining Theni district remained at 4055 cusecs.

The third flood warning issued this morning was preceded by the second flood warning, issued late last night.

Residents downstream in the southern districts of Theni, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram had been asked to move to safety.

Meanwhile, storage in the Periyar Dam continued to remain below of 136 ft. Water level stood at 134.3 ft, the PWD said, adding there was a drop in rainfall in the catchment areas.

Moderate to heavy rainfall was reported from many parts of Southern Tamil Nadu in the last 24 hrs.
