Consistency needed if players hope to make comeback: Vengsarkar

Mumbai, Nov 8 (UNI) The doors of selection are open to player like Sourav Ganguly, but they have to show consistency in their performance, said National Selection Committee (NSC) chairman Dilip Vengsarkar today.

Speaking at the launch of the Polycom Corporate Twenty20 cricket tourney here, Vengsarkar said, ''It was good to see Ganguly getting runs and there is a great chance of him making a comeback., But for that he needs to show consistency so also the other players who have scored runs over a period of time to make a comeback.'' The former captain admitted that he was a fan of Hyderabadi middle order batsman V V S Laxman. However, due to lack of fitness needed for a one-day tournament, laxman lost the spot, he said.

On the recent India performance, Vengsarkar said it was difficult to pinpoint any one area where there were problems.

''We lost a close match against the Windies and if we had won that we would have been in the semis. It is important to play your best on any given day,'' he added.

Vengsarkar said games like kho-kho, kabaddi and lagori should not be used during the warm ups as these games require twisting and turning and an injury like the one suffered by Yuvraj Singh could happen any time.

''I have spoken to the team management about it, and they have taken my suggestions in a sporting manner,'' he added.

'The Colonel', as Vengsarkar was called during his playing days, also endorsed the Twenty20 format.

''The format is the future of the cricket and it would help spread the game to those countries where cricket is still thought to be a time consuming game, he said.

There was no need to reduce the number of players for this format and the rules should also remain the same, he said, adding that the fielding standards would go up due to this format as fielding would play the most crucial role in this format.
