5 UP cities under newly-elected women mayors
Lucknow, Nov 8 (UNI) Five women candidates of the BJP and the Congress have been elected mayors in the just concluded Uttar Pradesh civic polls, out of the total 12 mayoral seats.
BJP women candidates recorded a win at four places including Gorakhpur, Agra, Meerut and Ghaziabad, Congress nominee emerged victorious in west UP city of Bareilly.
BJP nominee for Meerut mayoral seat Madhu Gujjar won defeating Congress candidate Sanjida Begum by a huge margin of 1.08 lakh votes.
Similarly, BJP candidate Damyanti Goel become the mayor of Ghaziabad polling 28,700 votes more than her nearest ruling Samajwadi Party rival Anjula Nagpal.
In the east UP city of Gorakhpur, Anju Chaudhary of BJP emerged victorious defeating SP nominee Sitaram Jaiswal by a comfortable margin of over 53,000 votes.
Anjula Singh Mahaur of BJP become the mayor of the Taj City of Agra vanquishing BSP-supported candidate Rekha Kumari by a margin of 26,335 votes.
In Bareilly, Congress candidate Supriya Aron defeated her nearest BJP rival Sanjana Jain by a comfortable margin of 66,203 votes to become the mayor of Bareilly.
All major parties, except the BSP, had contested the civic poll, which is regarded as warm-up before the 2007 UP assembly election.
BSP had not contested the local body poll directly, but extended support to independent candidates.
