Bhopal, Nov 7 (UNI) The opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha today demanded that Rewa should be made the headquarters of the proposed Panini Sanskrit University, instead of Ujjain.

The demand was made in view of existence of a large number of Sanskrit institutions in the Vindhya region.

Participating in the debate on the bill moved by Higher Education Minister Tukojirao Pawar for setting up the university at Ujjain, Mr Indrajit Kumar (Cong) and Mr Vanshmani Prasad Verma (Samajwadi Party) said majority of the schools and colleges for Sanskrit education in the state were located in Rewa and adjoining districts.

Mr Kumar and Mr Verma pointed out that several Ashrams of Sages were located in the Vindhya region and many organisations had offered to provide land and buildings for the university. Proposal for setting up such a university in Rewa was pending since the 60s, they added.

Mr Verma said if it was not possible to set up the university headquarters at Rewa, then two such universities should be set up at Ujjain and Rewa.

Mr Gajraj Singh Sikarwar(BJP) suggested that representatives of the Legislative Assembly should also be included in the general council.

According to Mr Pawar, the proposed university's jurisdiction will be entire Madhya Pradesh, but it can open campus elsewhere also for academic and research work. The Madhya Pradesh Governor will be its Chancellor, while the Chief Minister and Higher Education Minister will be members of the General Council.

Non-recurring expenditure of Rs 40 crore and recurring expenditure of Rs 10 crore were estimated for the university besides, provision of Rs 647.36 lakh for this year's budget.
