Pondy Social Welfare Minister Angalan gets bail

Puducherry, Nov 6 (UNI) Puducherry Principal District and Sessions Judge M Chinna Pandy today granted bail to Social Welfare Minister P Angalan in the wife harassment case.

When the case came up for hearing, Puducherry Public Prosecutor Shanmugham submitted that bail should not be granted to Angalan on the grounds that it would pave the way for erasing of evidence and could even lead to intimidation of the complainant.

Counsel Mr Udaya Bhaskar, who appeared for Angalan, contended that the entire case was politically motivated and pleaded to grant bail.

After hearing the submissions, Judge Chinna Pandy granted bail to the Minister.

It may be noted that Kavi Priya, Angalan's second wife had lodged complaints with the Lt Governor, Chief Minister and top police officals, stating that Angalan had threatened to kill her after she objected to his third marriage.

Based on the complaint, Thirukkanur Police on October 31 registered a case under Section 498(a) IPC against the Minister and transferred it to the all women police station at Villianur.

Following this, Angalan moved the court for bail.
