Mob violence in Nagpur; CID probe ordered by Patil
Nagpur, Nov 6 (UNI) The police resorted to lathicharge and burst teargas shells to control mob as sporadic incidents of violence and arson rocked some parts of the city today in protest against the massacre of a Dalit family by villagers of Khairlanji in Bhandara district in Vidarbha region recently.
The rampaging mob also damaged a car belonging to Congress MLA Nitin Raut, police sources said. Raut is currently abroad.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil announced a probe by CID in Mumbai this evening into the massacre. So far, 44 people have been arrested under section 302 of IPC in this connection.
A mob ransacked the office of an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Indora locality after damaging his official vehicle, and also smashed two-wheelers belonging to policemen and media personnel parked in the area. Some persons also pelted stones at newspersons covering the incident.
Earlier, miscreants damaged eight buses belonging to Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) in Wadi area. Violence was also reported from Medical Square, Golibar Square and Jaripatka localities.
No arrests have been made so far, police sources said.
The miscreants were protesting the killing of four members of a Dality family in Khairlanji in adjoining Bhandara district in September. Surekha Bhotmange (44), sons Roshan (23) and Sudhir (21), and daughter Priyanka (18) were done to death by a mob in the village on September 30 night over a land dispute.
