IIM, Tata Steel to celebrate National Metallurgists' Day

Kolkata, Nov 06 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) in association with Tata Steel Ltd would organise National Metallurgists' Day celebrations in Jamshedpur on November 14.

Considering the growth in the automobile sector in the country and the vital role of quality steel in complimenting the growth, an international conference on "Steels for Automotives" would be organised on November 13, IIM president B. Muthuraman told reporters.

On the day of the celebrations a special session called the "Reminiscences" would be held. Eminent metallurgists would speak on the developments on the subject on that day.

Mr Muthuraman said special cultural programmes would be organised on November 15 and a special students session has been planned on November 16.

An open house session for interaction with senior metallurgists has been planned on November 17.

Explaining the emphasis on the auto sector, Mr Muthuraman, the Tata Steel managing director, said in India around four per cent of the total steel produced is consumed by the automobile sector.

He said Tata Steel occupies 55 per cent market share in supply of steel for the automobile sector.

"The company producing around five million tons of steel supplies one million ton to the auto sector," he said adding that the growth of auto sector would attract more steel consumption.
