Centre's stand on Saddam verdict 'ambivalent': SP

New Delhi, Nov 6 (UNI) The Samajwadi Party today flayed the UPA government at the Centre for taking an ''ambivalent'' stand on the death penalty to deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.

Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh called Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee's statement on the issue ''ambivalent'', at a press conference here.

''It proves that the UPA Government's was acting on directions of the US,'' Mr Singh said, calling upon Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take a clear and firm stand.

The criticism assumes significance in view of the approaching assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh where the votes of Muslim may significantly influence the outcome.
