Ozonisation helps disinfect Golden Temple lake water

Nagpur, Nov 5 (UNI) A company here has helped disinfect the lake water in the Golden Temple at Amritsar by using the ozone purification system.

The ozonisation system, installed at the shrine about a year ago, has purified, de-odourised and disinfected 3 crore litres of water per day, said Ozone Research and Applications (India) Pvt Ltd Executive Director D P Rajesh.

An ozonisation system to disinfect the cooling tower re-circulating water was commissioned at Khaparkheda Thermal Power Station (KTPS) of Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Company (Mahagenco) in Nagpur district yesterday.

Khaparkheda has now become the first thermal power plant in the country to have such a system, Mr Rajesh said, adding that two more systems are expected to be commissioned at Parli and Paras power plants soon.

He claimed that ozone purification was more effective and economical than chlorine purification, and pointed out that ozone destroyed micro-organisms in the water, effectively leaving no pungent odour or taste behind and had no side-effects.

The equipment was manufactured in India in technical collaboration with Kaufmann Umwelttechnik of Germany, he said.

Countries in Europe had abandoned the use of chlorine gas for purification of water almost a century ago, and India was waking up to its advantages now, Mr Rajesh added.
