Muslims protest against death sentence to Saddam
Ludhiana, Nov 5: A group of Muslims today staged a noisy demonstration to protest against the death sentence awarded to toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and two of his aides by a US-backed Iraqi court.
The protestors, numbering about 200 to 300, blocked road traffic for about two hours in the Fieldganj locality of the industrial city a couple of hours after the death sentence was announced in Baghdad.
A majority of them were migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar who work in the hosiery units in the city.
They shouted slogans against the US and burnt effigies of US President George Bush and the US administration. The protest was organised by the All Majlis Ahrar party.
Addressing the protestors, All Majlis Ahrar party chief Maulana Habib-ullah said that the death sentence awarded to Saddam Hussein was another example of the ''muscle power of the US''. ''It is George Bush who should have been punished for crimes against humanity'', the Maulana said.
