Joymoti, Assamese first feature film to be screened in Rome
Guwahati, Nov 5 (UNI) The first Assamese feature film ''Joymoti'' will be screened at Asiaticafilmmediale (Encounters with Asian Cinema) in Rome on November 25.
The film made in 1935 by Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, had its international premier in Stugart, Germany, at a film festival, ''Bollywood and Beyond'', last year.
The movie will make it's Italian debut in the 7th Asiaticafilmmediale, from November 18-26 in Rome.
It was communicated by director of the festival Italo Spinelli on November 3 to curator of the film Altaf Mazid, a reputed film director of the state.
Expressing his joy Mr Mazid said, ''Its (film's) extraordinary historical value for originality of the story and the way it is told testifies the landscape of Assamese culture and tradition. It will be a unique occasion for the Italian audience to discover the diversity at the roots of the kaleidoscope of Indian Cinema.'' There will be two competitions for feature films and documentaries in the festival. It will screen movies from China, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Syria, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand and Uzbekistan.
The film is based on the life and sufferings of Ahom princess Joymoti, the wife of crown prince Gadadhar Singha. It revolves around socio-cultural scenario prevailing in the state during the middle part of the six hundred years long Ahom dynasty rule.
