Gujarat to set up evening courts

Ahmedabad, Nov 5: In a historic decision The Gujarat government has decided to set up evening courts in Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

The courts will function on an experimental basis in the two cities from 1815 hrs to 2015 hrs and would handle petty cases. The exact date of the commencement of the courts was yet to be decided.

This was announced by State Law Minister Ashok Bhatt here yesterday, an official statement said.

The idea of setting up evening courts came up from a meeting last year of Chief Justice who favoured such a step, which aims at helping small-time workers and daily wage-earners who cannot afford to attend a court during the day.

The decision was welcomed by all the Judges of Gujarat High Court, the release said, adding if the experiment succeeds, similar courts would be set up in other parts of the state too, the release added.
