Devotees take holy dip in Bihar to mark Kartik Purnima

Hajipur, Nov 5 (UNI) Lakhs of devotees took holy dip in the holy Ganga as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today formally opened the cattle fair at Sonepur to mark Kartik Purnima.

After inaugurating the world famous cattle fair, Mr Kumar recalled the mythological importance of the fair and stressed the need to promote the fairs having historical importance.

''A bill in the coming assembly session will be introduced to promote the fairs of historical importance in Bihar'' he added.

Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said the government was taking all steps to uphold the traditional glory of the fair.

Hundreds of cattle, many elephants, scores of horses, dogs of different breeds have been brought here from various parts of the country.

The 25 day long fair begins on Kartik Purnima every year since times immemorial.

Lakhs of devotees took a holy dip in the holy Ganga and elsewhere to mark the auspicious day of Kartik purnima.
