Dengue claims seven people in Karnataka

Bangalore, Nov 5: As many as seven persons died of Dengue fever in the State, with Davanagere district accounting highest number of three cases, while 92 others were infected.

According to official sources, the deaths were reported from Davanagere (3), and one each from Gadag, Chitradurga, Bijapur and Mandya districts in the State.

The sources said 30 cases of dengue fever were reported from Davanagere, followed by Bangalore Urban (20), Bellary (11), Tumkur (8), Gulbarga (7), Raichur (5) Haveri (3), Mandya (2), Kolar (2), Chitradurga (2), Bangalore Rural (1) and Chamarajanagar (1).

The sources also said that Chikungunya, which is also spread by the Aedes mosquitoes, had affected over 760,513 people in the state, accounting in almost all the 27 districts in the state. However, no deaths were reported due to it.

The Bijapur district accounted highest number of Chikungunya with 93783 cases followed by Bangalore Rural (83671), Gulbarga (81853), Bhagalkot (46669), Tumkur (43657), Bidar (43649), Bellary (39424), Dharwar (37431), Chitradurga (31729), Gadag (29964), Raichur (25854). Shimoga (22986), Haveri (20706), Chickmagalur (17376), Koppal (15256) and Mandya (13846).

Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts reported very few cases of Chikungunya, the sources added.

Karnataka Health Minister R Ashok, said that State Government has taken several initiatives to contain the spread of Mosquitoes borne Dengue and Chikungunya disease in the State.

The health authorities have been instructed to create awareness among the people about the two diseases on massive scale, besides purchasing fogging machines for the use against the breeding of mosquitoes.
