Govt to boost solar water heater concept

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) The government today said that it will install 10 million square meters of solar collectors in the eleventh plan, a major scale up from the present installion of 1.5 million square meters.

This would involve installations of solar water heaters in about 3.5 million homes in various cities and towns across the country.

The other installions are coming up in industrial and commercial establishments such as hoetls, hospitals, guest houses etc.

The programme will result in a peak shaving of about 5,000 MW besides saving up to 7.5 billion units of electricity and abatement of 7.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, Minister for New and Renewable Energy Vilas Muttemwar said.

The new scheme will attract an interest subsidy scheme on solar water heating systems under which loans are made available to domestic users at two per cent, institutions at three per cent and commercial establishments at five per cent through various branches of different banks.
