Biotechnology can open new vistas
Anand, Nov 2 (UNI) Biotechnology has emerged as a frontline inter-diciplinary area of science leading to integration of areas like engineering, physics, chemistry and molecular biology, Dr Manju Sharma, president and executive director, Indian Institute of Advanced Research, Gandhinagar said today.
Speaking on the opening day of a three-day international conference titled ''Exploring Horizons in Biotechnology: A Global Venture'', at the Sardar Patel university at Karamsad near here she said, with spectacular advances and commitments of governments, the full potential of biotechnology can be harnessed for the welfare of mankind.
Speaking on the occasion Prof G Padmanabhan of IISC Bangalore pointed out that due to the rapid progress in biotechnology we could get vaccines to treat rabies, typhoid and hepatitis.
He advocated that biotechnology as a subject should be taught in all universities of the country and that bringing biotechnology into the curriculum could also generate employment opportunities.
Besides 400 delegates from various parts of the country, experts from Australia, US, Argentina and Malaysia are attending the conference.
Academicians, research scientists and administrators working in different fileds of biotechnology and medical biotechnology will also be making their deliberations during the conference.
