Ban for curtailing NKorean nuclear programme
Moscow, Nov 2: UN Secretary General-designate Ban Ki-Moon has called on the international community to press North Korea to curtail its nuclear programme.
After his talks with the Russian leadership, Mr Ban told reporters that he hoped the joint statement issued this September urging North Korea to curtail its nuclear programme will be implemented through the resumption of the six-nation talks.
He said the North Korean Peninsula must be denuclearised, saying the international community should offer security guarantees and economic assistance to Pyongyang .
He also said North Korea must open its nuclear facilities to the IAEA inspectors.
''Sanctions against North Korea unanimously approved by the UN Security Council would remain in effect until Pyongyang complied with Security Council resolutions,'' he said.
