UP govt seeks succour in traditional medicinal systems

Lucknow, Nov 1 (UNI) To provide aid to millions of people living in rural areas of Uttar Pradesh -- besides the poor, the state government has decided to popularise traditional systems of medicine comprising Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathy.

In this regard, state Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today directed departmental officials to make serious efforts and prepare a list of resources required to provide better treatment facilities to people in these traditional systems.

''The state government will provide all possible help in making these treatment systems useful,'' he pointed out.

Mr Yadav underlined that homeopathy had made inroads in the interiors of Andhra Pradesh. Such efforts should be made in UP as well, he observed.

''All these systems are cheap and effective, besides being useful in treating serious diseases. The only thing needed in to made things more popular,'' he pointed out.

Mr Yadav asserted that the people living in rural areas could be provided better and effective medical facilities, supplementing the modern drug therapy.

The CM was reviewing the development of Ayurvedic, Unani and Homeopathy at a meeting of its advisory committee held at his official residence here.

The setting up of post graduate colleges of these treatment systems in private sector and opening up of medicine production for private sector was also considered at the meeting.

The meeting also considered setting up of a Cancer Treatment Institute, which would provide treatment facilities in Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathy, apart from Allopathy in Lucknow.

He maintained the Indian treatment systems were becoming popular even in foreign countries. ''The foreigners are adopting Ayurveda, Naturopathy and Yoga in their daily lives.'' ''There is a need to conduct more research in these fields, so that these treatment systems could be popularised among people.'' The Samajwadi Party supremo said serious thought should be given to the India Medical Treatment Systems Conference to be organised in Lucknow, as to how these systems could be popularised.
