Nokia opens new R and D facility in Bangalore
Bangalore, Nov 1: Nokia, the world leader in mobile communications today announced that it has expanded its Research and Development (R&D) facility in Bangalore with the inauguration of a 210,000 sq ft development centre in the IT corridor.
The Bangalore R&D centre, the largest Nokia site of its type in India would focus on development work for software platforms, chipsets and high-end Nokia mobile devices.
Nokia in a release here, said India has emerged a global hub for innovation and Research and Development on the strength of its skilled manpower and was now a leader in developing cutting edge solutions on both 2G and 3G platforms for mobile devices.
The expansion of the Nokia R&D centre was a fitting testimony to Nokia's commitment to India and its confidence in the India talent pool. The centre would provide Indian developers the opportunity to work on telecommunications technologies that would change the way people live, work and play.
The Nokia R&D centre in Bangalore was established in 2001 with the acquisition of Amber Networks. Over the last five years the R&D centre has played a pivotal role in the development of new applications and software platforms for product development. The software platform group worked on development of parts of the base services for the platform, application frameworks, user interfaces and test tools. On the chipset side the work done in India was mainly in the area of ASIC design, hardware design, integration and verification, protocol software design and integration, speech and video codec design and integration.
Nokia has two additional R&D centres in India in Hyderabad and Mumbai, focused on next-generation packet-switched mobile technologies and communications solutions to enhance corporate productivity.
