NE states to have satellite-based education

Aizawl, Nov 1 (UNI) Students in the North Eastern region will soon have satellite education facilities here.

Apart from Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura would also be brought under the satellite education programmes, the official sources here today informed.

These three states would be included in the first phase.

According to the plans, there would be a hub and a studio in these three states.

Nagaland and Tripura would have 20 satellite education facilities each while Mizoram would have 31.

In the first phase, the project would cover government-run schools and subsequently it would be introduced in private schools in the region. These resource centres would be located in blocks, higher secondary and middle schools.

The EDUSAT service would be made available in the remaining states of the region--Asom, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim by the end of March 2007.

North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) is co-ordinating with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the launch of the project.

The new venture is expected to bring down the dropout rates among school students in the region, besides, helping teachers to enhance their knowledge base, the sources added.
