NE DGPs to meet today, evolve strategies to combat terrorism
Guwahati, Nov 1 (UNI) The Northeast Directors General of Police (DGPs) are meeting today to evolve a joint strategy to combat terrorism after the arms haul yesterday.
Asom police yesterday caught three persons, carrying a large cache of arms to the ULFA from Bangladesh. These three people were directly carrying the consignment from Bangladesh to Upper Asom, Senior Superintendent of Police(SSP) Nitul Gogoi said.
The focus of the meeting is on regional cooperation to thwart cross border terrorism.
''We hope that some sort of strategy will evolve'' Asom DGP D N Dutta said.
With political turmoil in Bangladesh and uncertainty looming large after the January poll, the ULFA is moving fast and sending arms consignment to Asom, police said.
The ULFA has always been supported by the Jihadi elements inside Bangladesh over the years, sources said.
However, a possible exit of Begum Khaleda Zia-led Bangladesh National Party (BNP) government might change the whole equation and today's NE DGPs meeting is significant in this regard. Beside the DGPs, CRPF, BSF and SIB are also attending the crucial meeting.
'' Yesterday's incident clearly indicates that Bangladesh continued terror tactics inside Asom and we had prior information of the movement of the arms,'' said Mr. Gogoi.
