MCD Sealings: Traders begin 72 hours strike

New Delhi, Oct 30: Shops in all major markets across the capital were closed today as traders kept shutters down to protest against resumption of sealing drive in the city on Supreme Court orders.

The business community had announced a 72-hour Delhi Trade Bandh, which started today, to protest against sealing of commercial establishments in residential areas in the capital.

The Delhi BJP, National Akali Dal and even state unit of the the Congress extended their support to the strike. Delhi Medical Association and Retailer and Distributors Chemists Association also participated in the bandh.

Though government-run schools remained open and so did most of the of the private schools, attendance was thin.

The BJP and the traders also staged demonstrations near the state legislative Assembly, ninth session of which started today.

Police personnels have been deployed and tight security rrangements made in and around strategic locations, including major markets, in the light of violence that broke out during a similar bandh last month.

Stating that it was in full state of readiness to enforce law and order during the three-day bandh, the Delhi police had appealed to the general public to maintain peace and harmony during the bandh.

''We appeal to the people of Delhi to maintain peace and harmony during the bandh and help the police in enforcing the rule of the law,'' police said.

The police urged the people not to pay any attention to rumours and desist from causing any damage to government property as ''it is your own property''.

They also appealed to the agitating traders not to obstruct the general public in their daily activities.
