Chennai, Oct 25: Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko today announced that the party's political advisory committee member Kanniappan had been sacked after he refused to resign his councillor seat in Chennai Corporation.

In a statement here, Mr Vaiko said the elected representative was asked to step down in protest against violent incidents in the October 13 elections to the Corporation, but he refused to resign.

Ignoring the party directive, Mr Kanniappan also took part in counting of votes, boycotted by the MDMK and AIADMK, thereby indulging in anti-party activities, he said.

The AIADMK had also sacked two party councillors after they refused to resign their seats, while two others heeded the advice of the party high command and stepped down.

The three sacked councillors were sworn-in as independent councillors in the Chennai Corporation.
