Chennai, Oct 25: Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy today demanded that the Tamil Nadu government implement by Pongal day, January 14, 2007, the Supreme Court order permitting it to raise the water level in Mullaiperiyar dam from the present 136 ft to 142 ft.
In a statement here, he said, 'Since the dam, infrastructure, the river and local administration are all under TN government control, I demand that armed with the Supreme Court order, the PWD department of the TN government immediately turn off shutters on the dam to raise the water level.' If the government failed to do so by January 14 next, he would launch a farmers agitation to protest against the 'government's wanton inaction' on the issue, Dr Swamy said.
He said in the recent all party meeting, he had pointed out that the DMK, which threatened to withdraw support to the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre for the sake of few thousand workers of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) issue, the Mullaiperiyar issue concerned about more than two lakh farmers.
He said over two lakh farmers from seven southern districts of Tamil Nadu were suffering from lack of water for irrigation, while Madurai city had been deprived of drinking water as the Tamil Nadu government, in 1979, had agreed to lower the water level to 136 ft.
