Two people arrested for violating Marraige Act

Barasat, Oct 24: Two people from Haryana and parents of a 13-year-old girl were arrested from Bithari, a village bordering Bangladesh under Swarupnagar police station in North 24 Parganas for violating Marriage Act.

Police said here today that the poor parents sold their teenaged girl to a 45-year-old Rohtas Singh for marraige and received Rs 20,000. A ceremonial marriage was organised.

The girl's father was a van puller.

Police said they caught the accused just before the marriage and seized Rs 12,400 from Rohtas Singh.

Rohtas was accompanied by his brother Jail Singh, police added.
