Shameema Azad gets 'Shair-e-Kashmir Mahjoor' award

Srinagar, Oct 24 (UNI) Ms Shameema Azad, a noted singer and wife of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, was presented with the 'Shair-e-Kashmir Mahjoor' award here.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha gave away the award to Ms Azad for her extraordinary contribution in the field of literature, culture and music at a function held in the auditorium of Radio Kashmir here last evening.

The function was organised jointly by the Information Department, Doordarshan Srinagar, Radio Kashmir Srinagar, Mahjoor Foundation, Cultural Academy and Radio Listeners Forum.

A citation read on the occasion highlighted the role of Ms Azad from the days when she was a class 9 student.

Ms Azad has received several gold medals, awards and certificates both at the national and the international level and is also the recipient of the Padmashree Award.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor described Ms Azad as the ''nightingale of Kashmir''.

''She has not only brought laurels to the state, but the entire nation was proud of her contribution in the field of literature and culture.'' Gen Sinha said.
