Police driver involved in accident arrested

Srinagar, Oct 24 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir police today arrested driver constable Tajinder Singh involved in the road accident in which a man and his son were killed at Nowgam.

Inspector General of Police S M Sahai said driver Tajinder Singh was arrested after a case was registered under section 304-A of the RPC in police station Nowgam.

Assuring that the guilty would be punished, he said an inquiry had already been started in the incident.

Giving details about the accident, he said two scooterists, Ali Mohammad Bhat and his son Imtiyaz Ahmad Bhat, were killed in a collision with a police vehicle at Naiyak Bagh at around 1000 hrs today.

He later added that people of the area took to streets and indulged in arson and pelted stones on police.

Two police personnel and a fireman were injured in the incident, he said, adding police burst teargass shells to disperse the mob.

On the complaints of indiscriminate firing and force used by the police personnel, Mr Sahai said any police personnel who has exceeded his brief would be dealt with under the law of the land.

At the same time, he said, miscreants too will face the law.

Bodies of the deceased persons have been handed over to their family members, Mr Sahai said.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Rural Development Javid Ahmad Mir assured that stern action would be taken against the guilty police official.

He took the bodies of Ali and his son to their home.

Official sources said about a dozen persons were also taken into custody by police during the demonstration.
