Killing of two people sparks protests in Srinagar
Srinagar, Oct 24 (UNI) Police fired several rounds and burst teargas shells to disperse demonstrators who set on fire a vehicle after a police jeep collided with a scooter killing the rider and his pillion here today.
Official sources said two scooterists, reportedly father and a son, were killed when a police vehicle coming from opposite direction hit them at Noyakbagh Nowgam, about six km from here today.
People in the area, mostly women, took to streets and protested against the accident.
Police personnel fled from the scene abondoning their vehicle.
Sources said the mob set on fire the vehicle and demanded immediate arrest of the driver.
When a police party from Nowgam police station reached the spot, the demonstrators pelted stones at them.
Later, reinforcement was rushed from police station Sadar and Chanapora.
When the demonstrators refused to disperse, police fired several rounds and also burst teargas shells.
Traffic on Nowgam route was suspended for some time.
