Cong corporator set to become VMC Mayor
Vijayawada, Oct 24 (UNI) Congress Corporator M V Ratna Bindu is likely to be elected as the new mayor of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) on October 31.
Party sources said Ms Bindu was a strong contender for the post vacated by CPI's Tadi Sakuntala as part of a pact between the CPI and the Congress under which the representatives of the two parties will hold the post by turns.
Under the pact, the CPI would hold the post for the first and fifth year and the Congress for three years.
The VMC elections were held last year and accordingly, Ms Sakuntala's tenure ended on October nine when she resigned.
Meanwhile, official sources said the State Eelection Commission had appointed Krishna District Collector Navin Mittal as the Election Officer for the poll.
A formal notification would be issued on October 27 and a special meeting of VMC convened on the day to facilitate the conduct of the election.
Filing of nominations, scrutiny and withdrawal will be completed on the same day.
