Suspected Naxalites kill DIG in Orissa
Bhubaneswar, Oct 23: Suspected Naxalites today shot dead South Western Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Jasbinder Singh near Kolanara Chhak, about 20 kms from Rayagada in South Orissa.
Mr Singh was proceeding from Sunabeda to Rayagada to attend a function where two Naxalites were to surrender when the attack took place.
State Home Secretary Tarun Kanti Mishra said the DIG, on his way, stopped to take action against some miscreants who were collecting booty from passers-by at Kolanara Chhak near Laxmipur. Having done so, he was proceeding towards his car when the suspected Naxalites fired at him, hitting him on the head. He was immediately taken to the Rayagada Hospital but the doctors declared him 'brought dead'.
Police said Mr Singh was travelling with two securitymen but they were unaware of the incident and failed to protect him. The suspected rebels fired two rounds from a close range and fled.
Mr Mishra said soon after the incident, a red alert was sounded in all the police stations of the district and the neighbouring state informed.
Police launched an intensive combing operation to nab the assailants.
The state government has announced an ex gratia of Rs ten lakh to the next of kin of the DIG.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his profound grief at the killing and directed the police to nab the culprits speedily.
