Kozhikode, Oct 23: Muslims in large numbers gathered at mosques and special Id-gahs to offer prayers as Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety in northern Kerala today.
In Kozhikode, the main congregation was held at a specially made Id-Gah in the Beach, Manachira Square and many other places.
The prayer meeting at the beach was led by Kerala Nadavathul Mujhideen President T P Abdulla Koya Mahdani and KNM Madavur Faction President Hussain Madavur at Manacharia square.
Addressing the gathering, the religious leaders exhorted believers to work for universal brotherhood and maintain communal harmony in the society.
After the prayers, people gathered at the venues, hugged each other and exchanged plesantries.
In a message from the neighbouring district of Malappuram, Indian Union Muslim League Kerala President Panakkad Syed Mohammedali Shibhab Thangal also urged the believers to work for a peaceful society.
Reports of similar prayers and celebrations were received from Kannur, Kasargod, Wayanad and Malappuram Districts.
The biggest festival for Muslims, marking the end of the holy month of fasting or Ramzan and the beginning of the Islamic new year, is a day of prayers and gaiety with people wearing new clothes, visiting relatives and friends and enjoying special dishes.
